SHAPA are the UK's leading specialist association for the solids handling and processing industry

All our members are established specialists within their fields, and have the experience and commercial standing to provide quality, cost-effective solutions for all aspects of mechanisation for bulk materials handling and storage, conveyors, dust collection and control, instrumentation, mixers, big bag handling, sampling systems, sieves, valves and weighing systems and equipment.

Zooming around the UK

With the lockdown starting to be released in the UK, Europe and the wider world companies are starting to get back to working productively. However, things are looking different going forward. With a vaccine that may be six to eighteen months away or not at all if you read some scientific journals new ways of working are needed to ensure that we continue to be profitable going forward.

With more and more of us working from home new ways are required to hold meetings and events remotely, following many meetings using different video platforms SHAPA settled on Zoom to hold its council, marketing and technical meetings which have proved to be a great success with positive interaction from all those involved. However our greatest success to date has been to hold our Annual General Meeting and awards presentation on line using the Zoom platform. We were originally due to hold the event at the Brooklands Museum in Weybridge but this was closed due to the Covid-19 lockdown advice and we have rebooked the Museum for next years event. The AGM and awards presentation was well attended with over 50 remote locations logging into the meeting from all corners of the UK and Ireland. Despite some initial concerns over the formal proceedings around voting, this was as exactly the same as if the meeting was taking place in person, the meeting attendees were able to propose and second motions and voting was undertaken using the interactions in Zoom.

Based on our experience, if more and more of us do start to work from home permanently most tasks will be able to be carried out remotely using video platforms, there will always be a need to visit client sites, to review equipment and proposals there by ensuring that the equipment installed fully meets the needs of the process, a quick look at the total cost of ownership document on the SHAPA website will point you in the right direction when looking for a well-designed and functional plant.

Celebrating Success

This year SHAPA Solids Handling Industry awards are now in their fifth year and the quality of the nominations were outstanding. This year’s categories included innovation, export, newcomer and company of the year. The awards ceremony was held on the zoom platform in April and we are pleased to congratulate all this year’s nominees and the winners of all of the awards. We look forward to next year’s awards where once again we can celebrate the successes of our industry.
