Weighing and feeding equipment
The weighing and feeding of dry bulk solids with good degrees of
accuracy and reliability is one of the most challenging aspects of any
bulk materials handling system. It often requires great ingenuity -
involving delicate measuring devices operating in heaving duty
applications and hostile environments. SHAPA members, between them,
offer the best solutions available.
Usually, the first decision for any dry bulk solids handling system is whether to meter by volume or by weight.In some instances, the decision is clear cut – materials for re-sale are mostly sold by weight –- some products for horticultural use are an exception.
Not all weighing and metering takes place at the end of a process. There are many instances where ingredients or additives have to be accurately metered during the process - into a mixer, for example. This could be achieved by a series of individual volumetric or gravimetric metering feeders each adding a specific volume or weight of material into a mixing vessel. Alternatively, volumetric feeders or even high accuracy conveyors could deliver the materials into a mixer under the control of a system monitoring the increasing weight of a mixermounted on load cells.
In some processes, feeders are used to accurately and consistently load materials into extrusion machines or to sprinkle toppings across baked products or seasonings over snack foods. Many of these applications require tailored solutions specific to the customers’ needs.
In other instances, such as for sifters and mills, metering accuracy
is not critical per se but, the feeding equipment needs to be consistent
and reliable and not exceed the capacity of the process. Weighing can
also be a monitoring process such as for the flow of material on a
weigh-belt system for example. Through a control system, the speed of
the belt can be regulated to reflect the capacity of the process that it
feeds. Weighbridges are a means of checking what is loaded into trucks
either to ensure they are not overloaded or as a means of charging
customers for what they have collected.
