Industrial Metal Detectors and Magnetic Separators

The detection and removal of extraneous metallic particles is essential for both end-product quality and protection of production equipment. No food manufacturer wants a consumer to find metal particles in one of their products, no producer of a finely sifted powder wants a piece of sharp metal to damage to his relatively delicate check-sieve screen and no producer of plastic sections wants metal to enter his extruder. Metals get into processes for a variety of reasons and the sooner they are detected and removed, the better

Magnetic seperators

Ferrous metals and even some stainless steels are magnetic and therefore these are easily detected and removed by powerful magnets. Typically, magnetised rods will be used to form grids below silos or sack emptiers or above the inlets of mills, sifters or extruders for example. Magnetic separators can either be cleaned manually or some models offer automatic cleaning. There are versions for pneumatic conveying systems too.

Where non-ferrous inclusions are likely to be a problem, then there are many types of detectors available which use electronic circuitry to detect the presence of unwanted tramp materials. Some simply stop the process and sound an alarm. Those mounted to a conveyor, such as a flat belt conveyor, can be designed to automatically remove the section of product in which the unwanted inclusion is detected. SHAPA members supply equipment for all metal detection and magnetic separation applications. From high intensity magnetic separators to inline or end of line metal detectors, you'll find a SHAPA member to help.(

Learning to succeed

Many companies are founded on the back of an innovative idea by forward thinking people skilled in design, engineering, project management, marketing or other discipline. Whilst still small, the skills required to operate all aspects may possibly be gained by the founder. In former, less complicated times this may have been true as the firm expanded, but the pace of change of technology, standards and legislation as well as in marketing and particularly in financial accounting necessitates constant learning and improvement. The huge range of applications and processes served by our industry just adds to this challenge.....
