SHAPA are the UK's leading specialist association for the solids handling and processing industry

All our members are established specialists within their fields, and have the experience and commercial standing to provide quality, cost-effective solutions for all aspects of mechanisation for bulk materials handling and storage, conveyors, dust collection and control, instrumentation, mixers, big bag handling, sampling systems, sieves, valves and weighing systems and equipment.

Process instrumentation and control

All bulk solids handling and processing equipment and systems require some degree of monitoring and control. Most SHAPA members offer electronic controls for the equipment they offer. Some are independent suppliers of control systems, whilst others are specialist suppliers of instrumentation. So, whether you are looking for a state-of-the-art SCADA controls package, controls for a specific process, or instrumentation to install yourself, SHAPA members can assist.

SCADA systems

A single conveyor or processing machine will need controlling. The more complex a process becomes, the more important that it is correctly monitored and controlled. This is where the all-important instrumentation is essential.Silo contents measurement is a key area. Many silos are mounted on load-cells for stock control purposes and to enable specific weights of material to bedischarged. However, becausethe bulk density of silo contents can vary, level indication instrumentation is vital to prevent over-filling.Conveyors often need to be monitored, especially when they are enclosed or otherwise out of sight. Sensors can detect under-speed, over-speed, over-filling and belt-tracking for example. Elsewhere, controls need to be able to react to explosions, system blockages, sifter screen breakages, metal detectors, over-heated mills, etc. and take the appropriate action to prevent system damage or compromise to product quality. Because there are so many parameters associated withdry bulk materials handling systemsthe monitoring and control should be entrusted to those who understand the nuances of solids handling. SHAPA members are, of course, ideal partners – whether through the equipment suppliers themselves or the specialist instrument and control systems suppliers among them.

Learning to succeed

Many companies are founded on the back of an innovative idea by forward thinking people skilled in design, engineering, project management, marketing or other discipline. Whilst still small, the skills required to operate all aspects may possibly be gained by the founder. In former, less complicated times this may have been true as the firm expanded, but the pace of change of technology, standards and legislation as well as in marketing and particularly in financial accounting necessitates constant learning and improvement. The huge range of applications and processes served by our industry just adds to this challenge.....
